The Islamic Jihad Union (IJU) splintered from the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU) and seeks to overthrow the Uzbek government and establish an Islamic state. In 2004 the group was responsible for the attack on a bazaar and several police checkpoints on March (47 people killed) and the suicide bombing of the US and Israeli embassies in Tashkent on July.
The IJU is believed to have links to Al-Qaeda figures, which may have helped the group in its past activities. While the current operational capabilities of the group are unclear, it seems some members are involved in logistical support activities in that arena.
